Sleep better with sleep apnea treatment & oral appliances in Lynnwood, WA. Custom solutions improve breathing, reduce snoring, and support restful sleep.
Do you wake up feeling completely exhausted despite spending eight hours in bed? Does your partner complain about chronic, disruptive snoring or terrifying moments where you seem to gasp for air during the night?
Derived from the ancient Greek words meaning "without breath," sleep apnea is a potentially chronic, life-threatening sleep disorder characterized by repeated pauses in breathing throughout the night. These pauses can last anywhere from several seconds to multiple minutes, occurring as frequently as 30 times or more per hour.
Ongoing, disrupted breathing starves your brain of vital oxygen and traps dangerous carbon dioxide in your bloodstream. At Crosspoint Dental Center, Dr. Luke Daining provides custom, non-invasive dental sleep appliances to safely clear your airway, stop heavy snoring, and restore your deep, restorative sleep.
Sleep apnea generally falls into one of two distinct clinical categories:
A neurological condition occurring when the brain temporarily fails to send the critical signals required to command your breathing muscles to move.
The far more prevalent form of the condition. OSA occurs when air physically cannot flow through your nose or mouth, even though your diaphragm and chest are actively working to breathe. Because it is caused by physical blockages in the back of the mouth, OSA is highly and comfortably treatable by an experienced dentist.
During a sleep cycle, the soft tissues at the back of your throat naturally relax. For an OSA sufferer, these tissues completely collapse into the airway. As your body continues trying to pull in oxygen, your tongue falls backward toward the throat, tightening the blockage like a physical plug.
As your lungs, diaphragm, and abdomen fight harder for air, the negative physical pressure only locks the soft tissue blockage tighter. Once your oxygen levels drop dangerously low and carbon dioxide levels skyrocket, your brain triggers an emergency "panic response." It forces you to partially arouse from deep sleep just enough to tense your tongue, clear your throat, and restart the breathing process—a moment typically accompanied by a loud snort, gasp, or choking sensation.
Because these micro-arousals happen in a matter of seconds, most patients never fully wake up and remain completely unaware that they are practically "suffocating" multiple times every single hour. To compensate for this chronic lack of oxygen, your heart must pump significantly harder and faster, dramatically increasing your risk of high blood pressure, strokes, heart attacks, and heart failure.
If you or a loved one routinely experience any of the following symptoms, it is critical to seek a clinical evaluation as soon as possible:
At Crosspoint Dental Center, our treatment approach is tailored directly to your unique health profile, working in direct coordination with your primary physician or sleep specialist.
Because sleep apnea is a serious medical condition, a formal diagnosis from a physician via an overnight or home-based sleep study is required. Once diagnosed, your doctor will provide a formal referral to our office for an oral appliance.
Dr. Daining takes highly precise digital impressions of your teeth to fabricate a custom-fit Mandibular Advancement Device (MAD). This dual-arch appliance fits comfortably over your upper and lower teeth while you sleep.
The device utilizes safe, adjustable side connectors to gently tease your lower jaw forward. By shifting the jaw, it naturally tightens the soft tissues of your throat and holds your tongue forward, preventing your airway from collapsing.
For mild cases of OSA, Dr. Daining may advise shifting specific daily habits that actively worsen airway collapse, such as smoking, heavy alcohol consumption before bed, or the use of certain tranquilizers and sleeping aids.
If an appliance cannot fully resolve a severe block due to skeletal constraints, a permanent surgical solution may be discussed. This involves an oral surgeon meticulously sectioning the lower jaw bone to permanently pull the bone structures holding the base of the tongue forward, opening up your airway natively.
Do not let chronic fatigue or a blocked airway compromise your long-term cardiovascular health. Crosspoint Dental Center is located on the West side of 33rd Avenue, tucked perfectly between the Virginia Mason and PEMCO Insurance buildings, proudly providing expert care to families across Lynnwood, Edmonds, Mountlake Terrace, Bothell, and Mill Creek.
While Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) machines are incredibly effective, studies show that roughly 50% of patients eventually stop using them because the bulky masks, loud motor noises, and constant air pressure feel too intrusive. A custom dental oral appliance is small, entirely silent, requires no electricity, fits easily in a travel case, and is overwhelmingly preferred by patients with mild-to-moderate sleep apnea due to its sheer convenience and comfort.
Most patients adjust beautifully to their custom appliance within 1 to 2 weeks of consecutive wear. It is completely normal to experience minor jaw joint awareness, temporary tooth tenderness, or increased salivation during the first few nights as your facial muscles adapt to the forward positioning. These minor symptoms typically fade away within a few minutes of removing the device each morning.
Because obstructive sleep apnea is classified as a serious medical condition rather than a dental issue, custom oral appliances are typically covered under your medical insurance policy rather than standard dental plans. Our administrative care team will gladly help you navigate your benefits, compile your physician’s sleep study diagnostics, and submit the necessary medical codes to maximize your direct insurance coverage.
Our greatest achievement is seeing patients leave our office with healthier smiles, renewed confidence, and peace of mind knowing their dental health is in caring hands.
